Amangalla fills a building inside Galle Fort whose oldest part dates to 1684, when it housed the Dutch commanders; it opened as the New Oriental Hotel in 1865 and has been run by Aman since 2005.

The rooms keep their jackwood floors, arched shuttered windows and four-poster beds, with the fort and harbour on one side of the house and a walled garden and 21-metre pool on the other.

Breakfast, afternoon tea, morning yoga, 30 minutes a day in the hydrotherapy suites and a butler are part of every stay.
