Aman's beach resort on the south coast: 30 free-standing suites by the architect Kerry Hill, set among coconut palms on a hillside above a curved bay.

Every suite has its own plunge pool in a private courtyard and a terrace for lounging and dining, with floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors on both sides.

Stays include breakfast, afternoon tea, morning yoga and a butler, and the resort arranges safaris to Udawalawe, Yala and Bundala, surfing lessons and trips on Mawella Lagoon.
