The room
Sri Lanka is one of the world's premier wildlife destinations. Yala National Park holds the highest leopard density on the planet. Udawalawe is unrivalled for elephants. We take you there privately — before the crowds, with guides who know every shadow in that jungle.
A good tracker at Yala will know within half an hour whether a leopard is in the valley; a good tracker at Minneriya will know by the dust which way the herd is crossing. We hire the tracker, not the park.
Beyond Yala lie the parks the convoys miss. Wilpattu — the largest and the quietest, with the second-highest leopard density on the island — rewards the patient. Udawalawe and the Elephant Transit Home offer encounters that don't ask the elephant to perform. The August gathering at Minneriya and Kaudulla brings three hundred elephants to the same lake. Gal Oya is the only park you cross by boat. Bundala, a Ramsar wetland, holds flamingo and painted stork by the thousand.
Sinharaja, our last lowland rainforest and a UNESCO biodiversity site, holds twenty of the island's thirty-four endemic birds; the Knuckles Forest, Horton Plains and the Wasgamuwa interior round out the picture. Sloth bear at Wilpattu in palu season. Sperm whale off Kalpitiya. The peacock and the junglefowl — the national bird — at every clearing.
The camp is canvas, properly built, privately serviced. Two tents maximum per family group. A generator we'd rather not turn on if we don't have to.
