Mist, tea and mountain trains

The shape

The air changes the moment you climb. Sri Lanka's hill country is a world apart from its coasts — cooler, quieter, and draped in the green of tea estates that have been producing the world's finest leaves for 150 years.

The Kandy-to-Ella rail journey is one of the great train rides on earth. The planter's bungalows of Hatton, Bogawantalawa and Dimbula are among the most atmospheric stays in Asia. This is the journey for those who want Sri Lanka to surprise them.

The climate is cool enough for a fire at six. The light from the tea is hard to describe until you have seen how a plucker's sari moves through it. We will not try to over-programme you here — most afternoons are yours, and the country gives you plenty to fill them: Lipton's Seat at dawn above Haputale, Little Adam's Peak before breakfast, Ella Rock for the longer legs, the cloud forest of Horton Plains and the precipice at World's End. The waterfalls — Diyaluma, Ravana, Ramboda, St Clair's, Devon — punctuate the drive between estates.

For the determined, the Pekoe Trail now threads three hundred kilometres of tea country end to end; we walk it in sections that match your pace. Adam's Peak — Sri Pada — is a pre-dawn pilgrimage we route in season. The Knuckles range, biodiverse and barely visited, is for the day you want the highlands without anyone else in them.
