The room
The cool air of Sri Lanka's central highlands carries the singular scent of the world's finest tea. A living tradition — still picked by hand, still tasted by masters, still extraordinary. The planter's bungalows are among Asia's most atmospheric stays.
A working estate at six. A basket of your own, an hour with the pluckers, the factory floor before the day's leaf is weighed. Tea taken slowly on the bungalow verandah, the valley keeping its own time below.
Ceylon tea is not one country but seven — Nuwara Eliya for the lightest cup, Uva for the autumnal flush, Dimbula for body, Kandy for the bolder leaf, Ruhuna for the southern strength, Sabaragamuwa and Udapussellawa each with their own elevation and weather. Black, green, white, silver tips, golden tips: a tasting flight at the Hantana Tea Museum or a private cup in the master's cabin at the factory.
The Kandy-to-Ella line is one of the great train rides on earth — and we run its quieter sisters too: Nanu Oya to Haputale, the Ella–Demodara loop where the track passes under itself. We hold a private carriage, the windows open, tea served as the bridge at Nine Arch comes into view. For the determined, the new Pekoe Trail threads three hundred kilometres of tea country end to end; we walk it in sections that match your legs.
