Geoffrey Bawa's hotel, completed in 1994, runs along a rock face above Kandalama lake in 211 acres of protected forest, with Sigiriya Rock in view from the Sigiriya Wing.

It has 152 keys in 2 wings, 137 rooms and 15 suites, with teak and rattan interiors; the forest has grown over the building so that vines climb its walls.

Its dining ranges from a 6th-floor main restaurant to dinners laid in a lit cave and a 7-course dinner where Bawa drew his plans.
